“To get to Angola State Prison from Baton Rouge, Louisiana---a distance of fifty- six miles---you go north on Highway 61, then take a hard left on Highway 66. Or you can get there by committing the most serious of crimes” (1).
Angola State Prison is the place where Warrick Dunn met his mothers killer and the killer said that he never even killed her. This is probable the biggest prison in Louisiana and he goes there to meet the murderer. Warrick doesn't know what will happen. Because he doen't know if he will freak out on the guy or cry or just be normal.
“The club was headed to Miami for a summer meet, and Coach Williams wanted to compete in the 4X100. Though we didn’t win in Miami, we continued to get better in a hurry. K-Y was a great time. I took my first airplane ride when I was 10 years old to the Hershey Relays in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Five years later we traveled to Los Angeles, and we returned home to the West coast---style cool---mom saved enough money to buy me a polo shirt, baggy shorts, and a hat” (55).
Warrick was one of the fastest kids in Louisiana. He raced in Tokyo, and all over the United States. His mom liked him to race so much that she saved some money to get some baggy shorts, and a polo and a nice hat, which was alot to a kid that didn't get much. Also this shows how fast he was.
“When task force members arrested the suspects involved in my mom’s murder, police detective Keith Bates, a member of that task force, recalled how the sun finally peeked and smiled from behind rain clouds that had covered Baton Rouge for nearly a week. Bates believed it was God’s way of recognizing the good in my mother and that justice would prevail in this case” (87).
When the police caught the killers the community was so happy that it was like having sunlight after a whole year with out sunlight. The people would have gone crazy if they didn't catch someone. Also this shows how lucky and how much God is on Warrick's side.
"After the Orange Bowl, I flew home to Baton Rouge to be with my family and discuss my future. Actually, it was to reinforce a decision I gad already made prior to our bowl game. I understood the importance of education. It was a value that I had preached to my brothers and sisters my mom's murder three years earlier. Plus, during my senior year at catholic high school, I promised Mom that i would attend college and graduate. I wasn't about to break that promise. Education was my top priority" (109).
Warrick Dunn was such a family kind of guy he would always discuss things with his family before he made any big decisions. He also though that school came before sports, so when he lived with his brothers and sisters he would make them do there homework before they did any thing.
"We started 5-0 with victories over San Francisco, Detroit, Miami, Minnesota, and Arizona. After dropping our next three games, we rebounded with victories over Indianapolis and New England to set the tone for the remainder of the year. we finished 10-6 and made the playoffs as a wild card team, marking our first winning season and playoff appearance since 1982" (136).
Warrick Dunn was always known for never giving up, that's why he made it to the NFL. Because when people would tell him that he was to small he wouldn't believe it. Just like the NFL scouts though that he wasn't an every down back.
"On November 29, 2005, Nancy and Carl were ready to move into their cozy two-bedroom, one-bathroom north of Tampa. They had been told that there would be some special attention given to their closing owing the fact that it was the tenth house complete during Habitats tenth year in the Tampa area. What the did not expect was the scene that greeted them when they pulled up to their new home" (165).
Warrick was also one of the nicest guys you would ever meet off the football field. When his mother died he wanted to take her place for being the nicest person in Louisiana. Warrick's mother would stop on the side of the street and if she saw someone walking she would ask them if they needed a ride. Warrick wanted to give back to people as well as his mother did. Warrick started a thing like Extreme Home Makeover Edition, except for they weren't that extreme Warrick would give people 2 story home just not as nice as the Extreme Home Makeover. Even though they weren't as nice the people loved them just as much.
"I saw a special on ESPN about Jerome Bettis, who played all those years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Of course, hes a much bigger guy than me. Bettis talked about how long it takes him to get going in the morning" (190).
In the book Warrick said that he never was sore like Jerome was. Jerome is an example of how rough the NFL is. That is why people who play in the NFL retire so young is because they can really take that much of a beating for 11-15 years. Except for Brett Farve he is a QB and they don't take as big of a beating as everybody else does.
"I was honored just to be in his presents. He is a real sweet, real genuine person. I just thank god for his lovingkindness and his spirit----his sweet, sweet spirit" (217).
Like I said eariler Warrick was one of the nicest guys you would meet off the football field. In this situation he is helping an old friend from his neighborhood out. She didn't have a very good house and she was going to lose her house also because she coulddn't make the payments. This girl had a child too so Warrick really probable saved a few lifes in this sitation.
"First when my mother died, I didn't just lose my mom. I lost my best friend, I lost my mentor, I lost my hero, I lost my childhood, I lost my sense of innocence, and I lost my trust in the inherent goodness of people. That is a lot of loss to deal with all at once" (244).
Warrick's mother was his life. I don't know how he survived with out is mom because if my mom died I don't know what i would do with out my mom she is my hero and best friend and mentor also. I give big props to Warrick for staying stong and not giving up on his brothers and sister and him self.
"I was probable viewed as an ancient running back on his last legs. Physically, as I said, I felt fresh, I felt good, and I felt productive. The game was still fun. come to think of it, my playing days at Philson Stadium don't seem that long ago. Which only means that Mom must be somewhere close by watching and smiling" (272).
Warrick loved his football and when he had his last game as a Falcon he was disappointed and he didn't really want to quit but his body made him pretty much give up the sport. I just wish that I could be that way to never get sore.
